Fair Housing Act

The Fair Housing Act protects people from discrimination when they are renting, buying or securing financing for any type of housing. Adopted by the U.S. Congress in 1968, the law prohibits discrimination in housing and related transactions on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, disability, and familial status. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides additional information regarding the federal law at “Fair Housing-It’s Your Right”

Fair Housing Complaints

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) enforces the Fair Housing Act. HUD offers ways to report incidents of housing discrimination. Information on identifying housing bias and a description of the complaint process is available here.
